Well, scribes, I have to share this blog with you. Those who know me, know that I get right to the point. So here goes. I have received emails and posts on my social networking sites that are less than favorable concerning this area of ministry. In fact, some have been down right cruel, especially as it relates to believers who have never heard of scribal ministry. As a result, I was prompted by Holy Spirit to write a response of sorts.
Please know that I have no reason to defend the ministry of the scribe, as God has given it to me, us. I will say that our focus on scribal ministry generally surrounds our history as it relates to temple service in the Old Covenant even though there were scribes that functioned in other capacities throughout the scripture. Further, it is important to note that those who believe they are "prophetic scribes" are in "temple service" for lack of a better phrase - meaning they have been chosen to play very specific roles in building the Kingdom. Those dedicated to temple service in the Old Covenant, paved the way for us today - revealing a rich heritage that we can reflect upon in the present day. You and I are "present day scribes," but we are still in "temple service" as our scribal ministries are poured out within the temples of men.

This article, however, is written to give YOU a simple place of defense if you should ever need it. Who knows? You may encounter someone who does not believe that you have a legitimate ministry and who would rather fold you into something else. The trust is: ALL MINISTRY IS IMPORTANT. There is no one gifting, anointing or calling that can stand independently of itself in the eyes of Christ. We were created to walk as one in his image -- each person fulfilling their specific assignment.
Is the ministry of a scribe a legitimate ministry?
The short answer is “yes.” But for many, “seeing and understanding” the seat of authority of a scribe is entirely different. What matters most, however, is not that other people understand that God has ordained the ministry of the scribe but that YOU know it. Matthew 28:18-20 (Complete Jewish Bible) tells us that we have all been called to go out and make talmidim. Regardless of one’s “ministry,” this is a universal call to action - however the SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD LEADS YOU. I have learned in my life that our giftings and callings are as unique and different as we are as individuals. The bottom line is this: We must follow God's design for our lives as it lines up with His Word.
Matthew 28:18-20 CJB says, "Yeshua came and talked with them. He said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make people from all nations into talmidim, IMMERSING them in the REALITY of the Father, the Son and Ruach Hakodesh, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember I will be with you always, yes, even until the end of the age."
IN THIS PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE, WE LEARN THAT:
- All Sons have been called by God to "go and make" students of the Gospel.
- All Sons are called to the ministry of Immersion, doing their part to guide others in knowing God as he is revealed to us through Christ.
- All Sons of God are called to deep places of intimacy in Father, the Son and Ruach Hakodesh.
- All Sons of God are to teach others to obey God as Christ obeyed God.
2 Corinthians 5 (Complete Jewish Bible) tells us that we’ve all been given the ministry of reconciliation. It reads, "So it is with the fear of the Lord before us that we try to persuade people. Moreover, God knows us as we really are; and I hope that in your consciences you to know us as we really are. We are not recommending ourselves to you again but giving you a reason to be proud of us, so that you will be able to answer those who boast about a person's appearance rather than his inner qualities.
"If we are insane, it is for God's sake; and if we are sane, it is for your sake. For the Messiah's love has hold of us, because we are convinced that one man died on behalf of all mankind (which implies that all mankind was already dead), and that he died on behalf of all in order that those who live should not live any longer for themselves but for the one who on their behalf died and was raised. So from now on, we do not look at anyone from a worldly viewpoint. Even if we once regarded the Messiah from a worldly viewpoint, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is united with the Messiah, he is a new creation - the old has passed; look, what has come is fresh and new! And it is all from God, who through the Messiah has reconciled us to himself and has given us the work of that reconciliation, which is that God in the Messiah was reconciling mankind to himself, not counting their sins against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore we are ambassadors of the Messiah; in effect, God is making his appeal through us. What we do is appeal on behalf of the Messiah, "Be reconciled to God! God made this sinless man be a sin offering on our behalf, so that in union with him we might fully share in God's righteousness." All Sons of God are called to make an appeal of reconciliation.
IN THIS PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE WE LEARN THAT:
- Sons attempt persuade people to consider the Gospel just as Christ did
- Union in Messiah is living in the NEW way that Christ revealed
- Reconciliation is the SINGLE FOCUS of our Father in Heaven.
- Reconciliation, the promise of eternal life, must become our primary FOCUS in Christ.
- Sons have received the message of reconciliation.
- That we have been given permission to serve as ambassadors on behalf of Christ.
1 Peter 4:10 (Complete Jewish Bible), "As each one has received a spiritual gift, he should use it to serve others, like good managers of God’s many-sided grace – if someone speaks, let him speak God’s words; If someone serves, let him do so out of strength that God supplies; so that in everything God may be glorified through Yeshua the Messiah – to Him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen.
IN THIS PASSAGE OF SCRIPTURE WE LEARN THAT:
- Every believer has received gifts from God.
- All gifts are to be given into service for others if indeed we are good managers of God's grace.
- All gifts must be served out of the strength that God provides.
All gifts reflect the gift-giver, revealing his Glory through Jesus Christ.
Take some time to really consider these scriptures and the points mentioned. Then, review 1 Corinthians 12 in its entirety. In doing so, we can see this simple truth: "God gives all of his gifts to men for the purpose of making talmidim, serving others and glorifying Christ; and that not one gift or administration of ministry is more important than the other." If this is the case, no single person, organization or entity can dismiss your calling once it is rooted fully and completely in the Word.
The ministry of the prophetic scribe is a calling (an unquenchable, passionate administration for a particular type of ministry given by God) not just a function. As you study with us through the scriptures, you will learn that scribal ministry was set apart as a governmental office, and that scribes were anointed and sent to serve in that office "by God." It is true that some people have scribal assignments that they must complete -- but may not be scribes. But the calling of the scribe is one in which "SCRIBAL ACTIVITY" IS THE PRIMARY METHOD BY WHICH a person is called to walk out their ministry. Consider the psalmist, the minstrel, the dancer. Their lives are CONSUMED, DIRECTED AND SATURATED in their specific areas of interest. It literally helps define their worship and relationship with God. For the prophetic scribe, their scribal activity has also become the primary means by which their ministry is fulfilled. Isn't this exciting!
You have a ministry -- not just a gift that is infused into other gifts and packaged only for Christmas plays, Mother's Day events and such. In this scribe school, you will be saturated in the "biblical understanding" of scribal ministry and touched by Holy Spirit. We believe that when we fully accept and come to know who we are in our unique design, no other person can change it. Why? Because you will receive your confirmation in God and impact the lives of others for His Glory.
